OVERVIEW:
The original Hop Up magazine popularized the "little pages" magazine format and was started in 1951 by Road & Track magazine staff at Enthusiasts Publications.

This new title wonderfully expands on the DNA of the original and includes traditional hot rods, customs, racers, unpublished photo archives, and a broad topical chapter. The title has gone through several owners and is larger in printed pages and content than the original. In later iterations, Hop Up also featured unfinished cars to resonant with those interested in the "retro" traditional and kustom movement starting in the mid-1990s.

OWNERSHIP:
The first publisher was Tim Gavern of Tim Gavern Publishing, Huntington Beach California. The business was incorporated in July 1993, and it appears he printed a test issue in the Fall, 1993. The official "premier" issue was published in Winter, 1994 and ended after two issues.

The second owner was Mark A. Morton under the company name Hop Up Inc. He restarted the title in 2000 and issued a series of annuals and specials. These were all numbered sequentially. We currently do not have the history on how the ownership transferred to Mr. Morton. Print publication stopped in the 2009 to 2010 timeframe.

A new, third iteration began in 2015, and the first issue was numbered Volume 11 Issue 1. Mr. Morton apparently passed the torch to Justin Bass, John Gunsaulis, Marcy Molkenthen and Tim Sutton. It was published out of Long Beach, California and was a larger format with 172 pages of quality print. Content followed the title's early roots with traditional rods and customs but presented it in a more modern, artistic manner. Beginning with issue #15, it has been expanded to 224 pages and uses a wide-format print style.

PUBLICATION DATA:
The publisher did not provide circulation data to any of the periodical compendia.

CONTENT COMPLETENESS:
We estimate a total of 38 issues was printed between 1994 and 2023. We are still trying to confirm that we have a complete set of cover images.
