OVERVIEW:
Volkswagen Greats was published by Argus Publishers Corporation. The founder was Gordon Behn, who
worked previously for Petersen Publishing as the circulation manager. The editor was George Elliott who also oversaw editorial duties for
Off-Road Vehicles.
The magazine was started as an annual or semi-annual publication in 1970. Like many titles in their early years, it switched to quarterly and ultimately to six times per year.
Hot rodders loved the VW platform. It was perfect for customizing, street performance upgrades, kit cars, drag racing and off-road duties. The magazine had feature articles and cars, event coverage and technical how-to information.
After the December, 1978 issue, it was re-titled as VW & Porsche. This title then continued through 1991 when it was re-titled again as European Car.
