OVERVIEW:
VW Custom & Classic was a short-lived, bi-monthly title published by Petersen Publishing in Los Angeles, California. It
initially focused on air-cooled vintage Volkswagens and provided "correct and unbiased technological coverage to guide you through
every step of your custom or restoration
project". Editor Steve Higginson launched the title against McMullen & Yee's VW Trends and Wright Publishing's
Dune Buggies & Hot VWs. These two competitors had the dominant market share of VW performance magazines.
The magazine ended after the January, 1998 issue. In 1999, the title was resurrected and published on a quarterly schedule. Content provided a "best of" anthology of features and tech articles from the first seven issues, and it also included New Beetle customizing tips. The new editor, Tim Bernsou, also promised more technical articles on other water-cooled VWs, but the magazine folded after the Summer, 1999 issue.
