OVERVIEW:
Street Low Magazine was created by Gilbert Chavez in San Jose, California. Inspired by Sonny Madrid and the original
Low Rider magazine, Mr. Chavez created a lifestyle magazine that was about having fun with cars,
taking care of people in the community, and educating readers about the lowriding legacy. It featured stylized lowrider cars, event coverage, art and poetry,
club scenes, music reviews and other Chicano cultural topics. It was one of several titles that provided an alternative to
Lowrider magazine.
One of the goals of this website is to highlight the people who make the car magazines we love. In this effort we see the range of motivations, from inspired creativity in touch with the subject to those who greedily represent a subject with no ties or commitment to community. Mr. Chavez represents the former - he is creative, surrounded by talented people he cares about, and demonstrates strong positive values around community and the lowrider car culture. His effort to educate readers about the positive aspects of the communities' contributions to their culture and to the larger society were refreshing. Located in the Capitol of Lowriding, San Jose, he published this title with support from long time friend Tyron Dias and publisher-promoter George Arteaga.
